The Last Day

The last day, began, as last days do
Rather undistracted
‘Til Vesuvius out her ruptured crown
Nothing, held, retracted,
And with fiery breath torched my stone
Where I stood, erected
Splintering this column beneath me
Without words defected
The people ran not watching me fall
Their fears now reflected
I was no use now, mere rubble to land
On one, unprotected
And hear those screams and long to smile
To be not rejected
As ash poured burning, and blocked the sun
Thoughts in minds corrected
They would apologize to my face of stone
Tears with ash connected
And my face would stay locked in mocking
I’ll be re-erected.
